The latest beta thread (2)

Here's the place to discuss anything about Media Preview in English.

I think that the lag is actually coming from the fact that Media Preview currently doesn't handle video file shortcuts properly, and is taking a very long time to generate thumbnails for shortcuts on Win8 as it was the case with regular files. The fix should be available with the next beta.

Just tried Media Preview 1.4.4.468 beta with Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview 6.4.9879 64 bits.

Windows 10 keeps deleting the thumbnails after every restart and it also does not care about the Level 2 cache of Media Preview. Exactly the same that with Windows 8.1 Update 1.

Microsoft sucks. :x

Are you saying that the L2 cache doesn't work for Win8.1 update 1 as well?

Yes. The Level 2 cache lag is so heavy on my Windows 8.1 Update 1 X64 and Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview 6.4.9879 X64 that it feels like Media Preview wasn't installed.

On Windows I know Media Preview is installed and working because I can see thumbnails for media files not supported by Windows itself, like MKV, and because I can see the MediaPreview.cache file on C:\MediaPreview grow and grow. But the lag, the delay, is so big loading thumbnails that it almost doesn't make a difference. Windows keeps deleting and reloading all the thumbnails from C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer and ignores the Media Preview Level 2 cache no matter if it is 200 MB or 2 GB.

Lasts months I've been using FastStone Image Viewer to replace Windows Explorer and I'm happy with it but it's all so weird because this problem didn't exist on previous Windows versions. There is a lot of talk about that Windows 8.1 and 10 thumbnail cache reseting problem on internet forums and Microsoft tech people say it is a feature of Windows to keep it speedy. I could go back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.0 but ritgh now I'm happy with Windows 8.1 Update 1 + FastStone Image Viewer. Anyway I will keep checking this forum for news and test any new beta you release.

Happy holidays!

For v1.4.4.468, please get the download link at the first post of this thread.
There isn't any particular issue with this beta version. It's just that it doesn't improve a lot of things over the last official version. Still better than nothing :)
