Indeed, it's not normal.
Did you install the latest beta (b4)? Did Media Preview register itself to every image and audio formats although you didn't check any formats in the MPConf tool? Or just 1 or 2 formats?
It's difficult to diagnose this kind of issue without direct access to your system registry. So if you could export and send me your HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT branch, I could look at it closer and take a guess at what happened. Send it to me by email or by PM in order to not disclose any of your personal information on the web

I never tested the case of when you uncheck image and audio extension shell. I'll go fix this then!
