8K WEBM files will crash Media Preview, tested in Windows 10. File explorer will hang if Media Preview attempts to thumbnail an 8K WEBM video file. "COM Surrogate" found to consume a large amount of memory and CPU time until the file is deleted.

Steps to reproduce: download this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k7a8bw451M

with youtube-dl, https://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/index.html

it will generate an 8K resolution WEBM file. observe thumbnail behavior in windows file explorer.

Media Preview hasn't been optimised to process video files with such a big resolution. I suspect that it may be the case with some 4K video files as well. The issue here is that processing so many pixels at once takes a lot of time... So, some specific processing should be applied to shorten that. As I don't provide any updates on Media Preview anymore, sorry to say you're stuck with this issue.

If you really want to have a thumbnail, let it run, it should generate a thumbnail after a (long) while.
